Agnes Nakintu’s lifelong passion and commitment to Children of Uganda (COU) was rightfully recognized when she was awarded “2019 Best Employee of the Year”.
As Finance and Administrative Assistant, Agnes ensures that the sponsorship budget is distributed fairly among all beneficiaries. She willingly assists our sponsorship team with school visits during times of heavy workload. Moreover, Agnes consistently works beyond the scope of her job duties. She never misses an opportunity to extend her compassion to our children.
You see, Agnes was only 6 years-old when her mother died. Her father passed away 3 years later, which forced her to become independent at a young age. Agnes and her 4 siblings then went to live with their grandmother. However, due to health problems, her grandmother was unable to adequately care for them.
“My connection to Ann Allen [her sponsor] was a life changer! Children of Uganda gave me hope when I was hopeless and a future from nothing.”
Agnes graduated in 2016 from Makerere University in Kampala with a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce – a rare accomplishment for a Ugandan female. After graduation, in alignment with our policy of empowering students, we invited Agnes to intern with COU for 6 months.
“On January 22nd, 2016 when I graduated, I realized that I owe my success to Children of Uganda. When I signed my appointment letter as a volunteer, as well as a Finance and Administration Assistant, I saw a clear tomorrow. I knew I was beginning to live my dream life.”
Following a stellar performance, we offered Agnes a full-time position on staff. Today, Agnes says she is grateful for the opportunity to develop a career within the entity that aided her own success. Her experience as a sponsored child has had a profound impact – leading her to choose a life where she can extend the same compassion towards vulnerable children and their families.
“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”
