As we continue our series on VALUE (and who brings it to Children of Uganda) – I am thrilled to introduce you to Nicole Moorman. Many moons ago – the Board of Directors insisted that I hire an Administrative Assistant. I had been holding off in an effort to save money and fund our programs in Uganda. But the time came when I simply had to have help. Little did I know what an invaluable and incredible asset Nicole would be.
Teamwork Makes The Dream Work!
Her first day in the office – I had to rush out for a family emergency and I gave her a big package of handwritten letters from our students. I asked her to please read and organize them. The next day, she was beaming and told me what a great experience she had reading those letters. And, we have never looked back!
Nicole has worn many hats – administrative, sponsorship and communications. She shared with us that connecting students to sponsors, sharing stories of impact and transformation, as well as helping to spearhead programs that empower women and youth are but a few of the ways COU has changed her life. She further shared:
“I have learned just how capable I am of persisting. Nonprofit work is not easy. There are a lot of “no’s”, set-backs and disappointments. My heart has been broken. I have felt helpless numerous times when we’ve lacked the resources to come to the aid of children and families in dire need. But at the same time, I have witnessed again and again how quickly things can change. How one person can make a gift that transforms everything. How our team in Uganda stands in the gap and how the loving support of our sponsors make a difference every day for our kids. This work has taught me how to be brave, bold and resilient.”
Nicole and her family have been a part of many transformations. When asked about the value that the organization has had – she told us it’s the people she’s been connected to along the way. Her family has sponsored a student – now a young lady – named Jovia for many years. Their relationship is so special because she is truly the little sister Nicole never had (growing up with two brothers).
The COU team members – both here and in Uganda – have taught her so much and given her a greater perspective on the world. Their determination, courage and vision inspire her daily. The many children and families we support motivate her to strive harder and to never lose hope.
On a personal note – I cannot imagine Children of Uganda without Nicole. She has been my “wing woman” and right arm for years. She took time off to have her son Rowan, but graciously came back as a freelancer. Ultimately, she joined us once more as a team member and without her – I would be totally lost.
Nicole – you are deeply loved by all of us here at COU. I can’t wait to go to Uganda with you this summer!
