In 2005, following the death of his father, Derrick Kiggundu joined Children of Uganda’s sponsorship program. In January of 2018, Derrick’s mother Scovia was also chosen to receive Income Generating Activity (IGA) training and support under the umbrella of our Family Empowerment Program.
Scovia was initially supported with a piggery start-up. After some time, additional research and discussions with our staff, she decided to switch her IGA to chicken rearing. Scovia sold her pigs and bought 100 chickens which she soon turned into 400! Today, her project is thriving and has put her in a position to support the education and needs of all her children.
Small – and smart – investments empower women like Scovia to grow their own wealth and take on the financial responsibilities of their children. As she shares, “Right now, if Derrick is going back to school I can’t fail to get him requirements.” This is the very definition of success and the path we hope to one day lead all our families to.
