Bob Ssebandeke grew up in our program, graduated from Makerere University and is now giving back as a member of Heifer International, a prestigious global nonprofit working to eradicate poverty and hunger through sustainable, values-based holistic community development.
My name is Bob Ssebandeke and I am writing to say thank you to Children of Uganda.
Having joined Children of Uganda approximately 20 years ago, I feel like I am a living testament that proves sponsoring a child can truly transform a life. From an early age, my mother could not support my education or take care of me. I honestly do not know where I would be today without my sponsors.
In 1996, Children of Uganda placed me in a respected boarding school where I spent 7 years of my education. After graduating from high school, I was given the opportunity to attend Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.
At university, I pursued a degree in Food Science and Technology for 4 years. My sponsors paid for all of my expenses – as they had done for so many years before. This was a huge blessing and enabled me to realize my dream of earning a college degree. In January of this year, I graduated with a Bachelors of Science Degree.
Thanks to the guidance I received from Children of Uganda staff and my sponsors, I immediately began applying for jobs — including an exciting opportunity with Heifer International. I am proud to say that I emerged as the best candidate in the interviews and I got the job! I will now be working as a dairy production and business trainer for the “Fermented Foods For Life” project that will be running through East Africa until 2018.
I am so excited about my new position since it’s a dream come true to work for an international development organization.
My dream wouldn’t have been possible if Children of Uganda hadn’t believed in me and invested so many resources in my education and well-being. I am happy to share today that I stand out as an ambassador and success story for Children of Uganda.
It has turned my sorrows into joy and I can see a very bright pathway ahead for me. I am glad to say Children of Uganda rescued me, raised me and transformed my future.
