Life has presented her with many challenges and she has faced them all with extraordinary courage. Her beloved son, Junior Bernard, was recruited into our program at a time when she had lost hope that her children could get a good education.
Olivia started a small restaurant outside of Kampala where she prepared local food. She worked hard to earn money so that she could support her family. Sadly, her husband began beating her daily – so much so that her back was injured and she found running her small business nearly impossible.
She returned to her ancestral home to begin healing physically and emotionally. When stronger, she returned to her local restaurant and began rebuilding the business. Her husband moved to Sudan and has not been heard from again.
Our team gobbled up every delicious drop and gave two very enthusiastic thumbs up.
Here is Olivia to share her story and savory recipe:
Though Olivia is physically improved, her business has struggled during the long COVID-19 lockdown. One of our wonderful team members here in Uganda, Rose Nalwoga, invited Olivia to begin a catering start-up. She was so excited for the opportunity and is looking forward to partnering with three additional women who have children in our program (the mothers of sponsored students, Maria Assumpta, William and Divine).
In the coming days, we will be delivering materials for this new catering IGA to begin whipping up some yummy goodness for events big and small. Just in time for the festive Christmas season!
Olivia’s story of transformation is one that nourishes our spirits – especially as we enter the holidays. Thank you for continuing to believe in our families and their dreams of providing a safe and sustainable future for their beloved children.
