Soap is an essential item (even more so during the pandemic), which made it an ideal Income Generating Activity (IGA) to introduce to our supported families. And so, 5 COU guardians were selected to participate in mosquito-repellent and liquid soap making trainings to help them start-up their own group IGA.
The weekly liquid soap trainings were led by experienced COU guardian, Esther Kimbugwe (aunt of sponsored students Rose Namayengo and Banny Kakeeto). Professionals were also brought in to guide trainees through the mosquito-repellent soap training.
The selected trainees included:
Guardians were taken through all steps of the manufacturing process, as well as shown the types of materials and quantities needed to make a safe and effective product.
They were trained in quality assurance, proper hygiene maintenance, safety precautions while at work, product storage and product maturity period. They were also taught basic records keeping and IGA management.
With training completed and safety guidelines firmly in place, practical sessions began once a week (limiting exposure to the strong chemicals used in the soap making process is essential for your help).
The Agali Awamu Soap Making IGA Group banded together late last year. When COU staff recently checked on their progress, the group had produced and packaged 5 (20 liter) Jerry cans and 16 (5 liter) Jerry cans of their liquid soap ready for sale. The group is still new in the market, so they are fighting to have their products compete among established soap manufactures.
We advised the group to approach supermarkets, schools and shops to market their products so they can widen their market. Next step will be formally registering with the Uganda Bureau of Standards to get a gold seal of approval.
All of the beneficiaries are so grateful to COU and our supporters for the knowledge, skills and resources to earn income for their families. They are excited to grow their business and teach other members in the community to join them.
