Several months ago, we shared the story of one of our most vulnerable students, Sharif Ssenono, and his mother Sarah. Since then, the family endured even more hardship – followed by a series of miracles! First, Children of Uganda’s supporters came to their rescue helping us raise thousands of dollars in emergency funds.
Sarah and her children were sleeping on the ground of their home without mattresses or proper bedding materials. Thanks to supporters like you, we were able to purchase the following for the family’s comfort and wellbeing: a double decker bed, a single bed, three new mattresses, grass mats, three bedsheets and three blankets. Sharif was especially excited to get a new bunk bed and enjoyed learning how to put it together:
Our next priority was to add security to their home with a new front door. We also improved ventilation in the home with a new window that can be opened and closed. And most recently, we were able to arrange for a new pit latrine (toilets) to be installed on the property. As you can see from the “before” photo, the new structure is a vast improvement! The family is so happy and excited to finally have a place for toileting and proper disposal of waste.
Children of Uganda’s team also provided the family with more supplements and nutritious food, such as beans, milk, potatoes, fresh fruit and medicine. Sarah is also receiving trauma counseling to process many of the things she’s endured. According to her counselor, the sessions are progressing well and there is positive growth since their initial meeting. Sarah’s overall wellbeing seems to have greatly improved and her confidence has been boosted.
