For many Ugandan families, this is an all-too-common reality and food insecurity has only worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gratefully, thanks to Children of Uganda’s generous sponsors and supporters, our students and their families can stop worrying.
In fact, when our staff called Sarah Nanyonga, guardian of sponsored student Sharif Ssenono (pictured center below), to inform her that food and supplies were ready for pick-up at their local trading center she exclaimed:
“God is great for sending Children of Uganda to save our family. I did not know what my children were going to eat today. How did you know that we slept on empty stomachs? Thank you COU for the tremendous support.”
Uganda went into yet another strict COVID-19 lockdown on June 17th after the Delta variant was detected and cases surged across the region. The measure banned cross-district transportation, which cut off many from their jobs and market places (where they would buy food and other basic necessities).
Over 200 supported families were monitored during the period both in Kampala/Mukono and in Kyotera to coordinate food relief pick-up, provide counseling, as well as check on their general welfare, health and home study progress.
Monitoring was primarily done by phone due to travel restrictions and we again worked with local food vendors to ensure that families could safely receive their emergency supplies – including food items and washing soap.
We have received so many messages of profound gratitude from students and their guardians. And, all of this was made possible thanks to our incredible supporters.
Webale nyo – Thank you very much!
