Denis Ssekajjugo and 11 of his family members (including his parents, 6 siblings and 3 relatives) have been living and sleeping under an unsafe roof. That’s because their once beloved home was severely damaged by an earthquake – collapsing an exterior wall and leaving them exposed to the elements, mosquitoes, snakes and rats.
Although Denis has both parents, his mother Margaret is the family bread winner and works as a peasant farmer primarily growing bananas. Our staff encouraged Margaret on several occasions to save and work on the house, but it became clear that she was not in a position to rebuild the home.
On July 31st 2021, with Children of Uganda’s financial support, building materials were delivered to Denis’ home. Construction began on August 4th and the home repairs were completed on August 11th. The house is now complete and safe for Denis and his family to stay in.
When our team went out to check on the progress, Denis was speechless and even shed some tears. He finally spoke to say, “I can’t believe it. I hadn’t dreamt of having a better house.” Denis and his siblings actively participated in the construction process because of their excitement and love for what was happening.
The entire family is beyond grateful and still in shock that Children of Uganda was able to rebuild their home in addition to sponsoring Denis, delivering 2 months of food relief and so much more.
